Do you think it's possible to become addicted to the Internet?

I definitely think so. From funny pictures to YouTube to porn, and even looking up information on Google or Wikipedia, a hell of a lot of shit on the Internet feeds into our desire for instant gratification. Anything you want, anything you need, just click a few buttons and there it is. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you've spent three or four hours in one spot, doing nothing but mindlessly wander from one url to the next.

I've been addicted to the Internet in the past. And I still can be, sometimes. I used to sleep with my laptop next to my bed, open it up in the morning, go away only when I had work, and after coming home I'd go back on until bedtime. It got to the point where, during a major power outage two winters ago, after my laptop ran out of battery I had quite literally nothing else to keep my mind occupied.

I think the scary thing about the Internet is, once you get on, you tend to really lose track of time. It's like you become so entranced in this flashy world of wonder that you forget there's a real world out there, waiting to be experienced and explored.

Or at least, that's my experience. Getting too attached to the Internet, it gave me momentary satisfaction, but at the expense of everything else in life. The Internet is a great tool and it's great for entertainment as well, but too much of it will pull you in like a black hole, from which you may never escape.

Oh, internet addiction is definitely a legitimate problem for a good number of people. I mean, as long as you're plugged in there is always something to do or learn or fap to or stalk or shop or unravel the mystery behind the cosmos or...well, you get the idea. I mean, I would have to say that I went through an addictive period back in high school due to my many...groundings. It was so bad that when the electricity got cut off (due to an accident) for that one day...I almost cracked. I could of played a handheld or read a book or just GO OUTSIDE AND LOOK FOR SOMEONE TO DISCUSS MY TEENAGE ANGST WITH, but nope, I just sat at the computer desk...staring into the screen hoping for just a spark of online activity.

Then again, once I like something I keep going at it until I get sick of it. Masturbation and melon bread were QUITE the problem children. Still is...well, the melon bread is!

I've been stuck on the net for a while myself...I see no end in sight and it seems when I'm not online that I feel hopeless and powerless. The net has become more than a simple addiction for me, it is the haven in which I seek refuge from the world around me. Technology is like my enlightenment.

Yeah, there's that as well-the internet becoming a safe house/panic room. Especially if you find it difficult to deal with other people, but still want to interact with them! Or know, being so different that you can't fit in (well, I guess that depends on where you're from and stuff) and them specialized forums and chatrooms are the only places where you can get some recognition and approval by being the real you. Or something o_o.

I'm addicted to the internet. I'm not going to lie about it, or try to find other ways around the subject. I have been for years, and the funny thing is, is that my mom and my sister's friend Shey both believed I was depressed because all I would do is sit at home and be on the computer. They didn't take into account that this is just what I wanted to do. They couldn't understand why I didn't want to hang out with "my friends" from school. I enjoyed my time at home, sitting around online, rping while playing Winterbells, or Rebirth RO, or even just talking to people while I watched tv or something. The internet was especially gratifying for me when I was stuck up in Charlottesville with literally no one to talk to but my grandparents, and occasionally my aunt who would only come by on certain days, if she wasn't busy teaching art at the prison, or doing any number of her community service projects.

Does this mean that I don't have a life? No. I have friends who invite me out, I have a job, and most of the time on my off days, Chris and I are doing something outside of the house unless we have absolutely no money. But I won't lie to you and say that I wouldn't mind just sitting around spending countless hours on here, scrolling through Tumblr or Facebook, or even watching youtube videos all day. Because this is what I like to do. The internet is my hobby, as is football for some people, or coin collecting for others.

I'm sure nearly anything can be considered an addictive trait. Even some weird, crazy people get addicted to cutting paper with scissors. >_>

...I used to like putting glue on my hands and then letting it dry so I can peel it off. That lasted until about...8th grade. So, yeah, Kurisu-kun is right- practically anything can have addictive properties, it just takes that special...knack to find it.

...I used to do something similar, except with bucket paint. It would dry up a little and be like a second skin. I'd peel it up a bit and make it look like my skin was melted or damaged. I was partially zombified. :p
